The Onesie Sleep Safe Project
Uncategorized
We are excited today because our Onesies are ready to be picked up from the graphics folks!
Prevent Child Abuse of St. Joseph County has received a grant to provide one FREE onesie to all of the children born in South Bend. This onesie has the important message "Fragile, don't shake me" imprinted on the front and "This side down" on the back so new parents will learn the proper way to place their sleeping baby to prevent crib death.
Along with this important message imprinted on the shirt, we will provide a 3"x5" clothing tag with additional tips and resources that will help prevent other forms of child abuse( see tips below). Our thanks go out to local printers AlphaGraphics, Apollo Printing and Duley Press for donating the printing of the tags.
If you want to help with this project by donating money, please contact Jennifer Pickering at (574) 210-9713.
Safe Sleep
Babies sleep safely:
-
On their back - it's not safe to place a baby on their tummy or side.
-
Alone - don't bed share with your baby! Room share instead.
-
In a crib that meets current safety standards with a secure fitting mattress.
-
Use a sleep sack or sleeper instead of a blanket.
-
Cribs should be free of anything soft and fluffy including blankets, pillows, bumpers or stuffed animals.
-
Offer a pacifier whenever you put your baby down to sleep. If you are breastfeeding, wait until your child is one month old.

Tips for Tears:
-
Check to see if your baby is hungry, needs to be burped or have a diaper change.
-
Is your baby sick? Call your doctor if necessary.
-
Take a walk or a ride in the car.
-
Speak softly to your baby; play soothing music.
-
Gently rock your baby; try a pacifier.
-
Wrap your baby in a soft blanket; try holding them upright against your shoulder.
-
All babies cry! Most babies cry for 2-3 hours each day - more often in the evening. Your baby crying doesn't mean you are doing anything wrong but if you find you are getting frustrated:
-
Place your baby in a safe place and take a short time out.
Ask for help - call a friend or relative.
Remember - crying doesn't hurt a baby but shaking does!
It's important that any one who cares for your baby also knows how babies sleep safely and what to do and who to call if they start to feel frustrated.
